Mexican Christmas Traditions

Jarritos fruity tequila cocktails

446 · Aug 19, 2013 · 2 Comments

If you love to entertain and want to whip up some instant fun, Jarritos fruity cocktails are so easy to make, you'll have plenty of time to spend with your guests. This is what I'll be serving up to visitors during the Labor Day weekend while we hang by the pool and soak up the last of the summer sun.

Best Jarritos flavors to use

Not sure what flavor you like? Below are the Jarritos flavors I like to keep in the pantry, rotating flavors when I go to the store to restock, for making this quick cocktail. If you don't have a Mexican market or local store that sells these sodas, you can also purchase Jarritos online.

  • Strawberry (fresa)
  • Tamarind (tamarindo)
  • Mandarin Orange (mandarina)
  • Pineapple (piña)
  • Guava (guayaba)
  • Lime (limón)
  • Mango
  • Passion fruit (maracuyá)
  • Watermelon (sandía)
  • Fruit Punch (tutti frutti)

Variations on this drink

For those who like to play bartender, you can try mixing some of the Jarritos soda flavors to make more unique cocktails, such as pineapple-guava, strawberry-lime, mandarin-pineapple, or strawberry-mango. If you like, you can also substitute light-colored rum for the tequila, or make it more tropical and use Malibu coconut-flavored rum.

Other quick and easy cocktails

  • A paloma is always a crowd-favorite, and you can use either fresh grapefruit juice, Jarritos toronja (grapefruit flavor), or Squirt to achieve a similar taste. Add salt or sugar to the glass rim for a special touch.
  • Spanish tinto de verano is a quick cocktail you can mix up that also includes fruit-flavored sodas, along with red wine and sweet vermouth.
  • An Iced Carajillo is a simple and tasty cocktail that's popular in Mexico and only has two ingredients.
  • Margaritas are always in style, too! You can make frozen or on the rocks. My personal favorites include a mandarin orange margarita, watermelon margarita, and a red prickly pear margarita.

Wordless Wednesday: What I ate at L.A. Restaurant Week

1 · Aug 7, 2013 · 1 Comment

Since we're still relatively new to Los Angeles, we decided to get out of the house during L.A. Restaurant Week after I saw the #dineLA hastag on Twitter. We hadn't been downtown yet, so we decided to head into the city for an experience. We ended up at Rosa Mexicano (the LA Live location) because I'd eaten there in another city when I was traveling for work a few years ago and liked it quite a bit.

Here's what I ate at Rosa Mexicano for L.A. Restaurant Week:

Appetizer: Tacos dorados de pollo (also known as flautas) served with crema Mexicana, cheese and salsa verde.

Main Course: Carne asada, frijoles con chorizo, esquites and a fresh salsa verde. The esquites were so good that I had to steal José's since he's not really a fan. I couldn't let them go to waste!

Dessert : Espresso flan with a cinnamon whipped cream and nueces (pecans). The galleta on the bottom was divine!

I also loved this little detail in the decor on the walls at this location that reminded me of the cliff divers in Acapulco.

  • Rosa Mexicano has a Festival de Helados going on through August 26 (at all locations) with paletas, raspados, helados and more in interesting flavors such as guava, chile de árbol and huckleberry, honey-amaranth crunch, plantain and peanut butter, and others. Check RosaMexicano.com for the addresses of locations in New York, L.A., Miami, Boston,  Atlanta, Washington D.C., Minneapolis, San Francisco and other cities.

Guacamole with mango and pomegranate

17 · Jul 30, 2013 · 6 Comments

You may remember from a recent post that my family goes crazy for fruity guacamole. That's why, when I hosted an #iloveavocados live party with Avocados From Mexico, I wanted to make another version of my fruity guacamole with one of my favorite fruits: Mango. I love to experiment with lots of different sweet and savory guacamoles and this version with mango, pomegranate seeds, red onion and serrano chile is one of my absolute favorit

Another sure sign that the recipe was a success: Some of the guests sent tweets or posted on Facebook the next day that they wished they could have some more!...

Guacahummus

9 · Jul 29, 2013 · 6 Comments

Guacahummus sounds a lot like what you might imagine it to be... guacamole (sort of) mixed with hummus. Actually it's a blend of hummus, avocados and lime juice. I served this simple, healthy dish at my #iloveavocados live party with Avocados From Mexico recently and surprisingly, most of my guests were having it for the first time. The dish was definitely a hit—they scraped every last morsel out of the bowl.

The main reason why this dish is so great—aside from being very healthy—is that you can make a semi-homemade version with a store-bought hummus of your choice (I like Sabra's classic hummus), which helps you get this dish from food processor to plate in about five minutes. I use a 3-cup Cuisinart mini prep (available in my Amazon aStore, El Mercadito), which fits the ingredients perfectly. A bonus: This recipe is both vegetarian and vegan-friendly and is also gluten-free.

My #ILoveAvocados Live Party with Avocados From Mexico

7 · Jul 27, 2013 · 3 Comments

I recently hosted a fabulous party with Avocados From Mexico and Latina Bloggers Connect at my home. This is a sponsored #ILoveAvocados LBC Live Party post. All opinions and recipes are my own.

It's no secret that I love avocados, and even if you've been reading The Other Side of The Tortilla for just a short time, you've probably seen plenty of avocado recipes here. From eating them plain with a squeeze of lime juice and a pinch of salt to turning them into a gourmet meal, I love avocados any which way you slice them. That's why, when I was approached to host a live party at my home with Avocados From Mexico, I jumped at the chance to share some versatile avocado recipes with some of my favorite Latina bloggers. I demonstrated four recipes using avocados (all of them vegan or vegetarian-friendly, by the way) and sent my guests home with a surprise—a jar of my freshly made salsa verde con aguacate.
